Waunakee wrestlers go 3-2 at Lodi, defeat Baraboo in dual meet

Doing the math, it was a good weekend for the Waunakee High School wrestling team.

At Saturday’s Lodi Team Tournament, the Warriors went 3-2, winning 61 percent of their matches and racking up 23 pins against stiff competition.

The day before, Waunakee defeated Baraboo in a Badger North dual match to remain unbeaten in conference action.

“Any time you can win in conference, it’s a plus,” said Warrior Head Coach Mark Natzke. “Baraboo has a decent team. We really wrestled well.”

Now 6-3 overall in dual meets, with a 3-0 mark in the Badger North, Waunakee will turn its attention back to Badger North competition as the Warriors host Reedsburg on Thursday and Sauk Prairie on Friday.

They will then hit the road Saturday for an invitational meet at Whitnall.

Waunakee 59, Baraboo 10

Six pins helped the Warriors take care of the Thunderbirds on the road.

“The wrestlers who stuck out, they ended up getting pins, and in close matches, they took kids down a few times,” said Natzke. “At the end, they got takedowns and put them on their backs on got the pin.”

Ben Statz got the night started by pinning Lucas Miller in 3:32 at 152. Next up was Nate Lorenz, who scored a 24-14 major decision over Mason Bisch.

In all, Waunakee won the first eight matches, as Preston Webster pinned Hunter Kluender in 5:35 at 170. After Jacob Frey earned a 13-8 decision at 182 against Jacob Kimpfbeck, James McFarlane won by fall in dramatic fashion over Tyson Fry in 5:52.

At 220, Reed Ryan won a 12-2 major decision over Avery Estes, with Alan Olkowski sticking his opponent, Colin Marquardt, in 2:38 at 285.

A forfeit was awarded to Berhett Statz at 106, before Baraboo finally got on the board. The Thunderbirds couldn’t generate any momentum, though, as Ty Miller scored an 8-2 decision over Johnathan Schieber at 120. The Warriors finished the night with three straight wins, as Jackson Ellis (138) and Zach Marek (145) both came up with pins and Colton Grindle edged Malaki Ringelstetter 5-4 at 132 pounds.

Marek made his return from injury in the dual meet.

Lodi Team Tournament

The Warriors finished a solid third in the team standings, as Elkhorn, who also won the recent Mid-States tournament, took the top team with a 5-0 record.

Lodi went 4-1, Evansville-Albany had a 2-3 mark, while Janesville Craig was 1-4 and Seymour went 0-5 at a meet where teams faced each other in dual meet competition.

While Waunakee had no 5-0 individual wrestlers, seven Warriors did go 4-1 on the day and three finished with 3-2 records.

Marek shared the 145-pound spot and went 3-0 in the tournament.

“All guys picked up three or more wins for us,” said Natzke. “There were some very solid teams there. Evansville-Albany, Lodi and Elkhorn all battle to go to team state.”

Elkhorn is currently ranked 10th in Division 1, while Evansville-Albany sits in 11th in the Divsion 2 rankings and Janesville Craig is one of the top three teams in the Big Eight Conference.

Waunakee started off with a 61-12 demolition of Seymour, with Lorenz leading the way. He beat a state qualifier from Seymour during the meet.

In round 2, Waunakee got past Evansville-Albany 41-22, before the Warriors succumbed to Elkhorn 42-26 in round 3.

Waunakee got back on track by defeating Janesville Craig 55-18 before the Warriors lost a heartbreaker 33-32 to Lodi.

“The Lodi match was a great dual and a great ending,” said Natzke.

Waunakee found itself down by 18 points with three matches remaining. Ellis and Marek each had pins, setting up a chance for Ben Statz to tie the match with a pin at 152.

“If he had gotten a pin, we would have been tied,” said Natzke. “He wrestled great and had the kid on his back a couple of times. He was really close to doing it at the end, but he ended up getting a technical fall.”

That wasn’t enough for Waunakee to even the score, and Lodi escaped with a victory.

Against Evansville-Albany, Waunakee gained momentum right away.

“We got on a roll,” said Natzke. “We got a bunch of wins early on, and the way that dual meet went gave us confidence for the rest of the day.”

Elkhorn, however, proved too much for the Warriors, who won six of 14 matches. Olkowski gained a measure of revenge, however, at 285, beating an opponent who defeated him twice at the Mid-States event. Janesville Craig was no match for Waunakee, as the Warriors won nine of 10 matches, with eight coming by pin. Starting at 182 and continuing into 106 and 113 divisions, Waunakee earned six straight pins.

One of the key performers for Waunakee at Lodi was James McFarlane, who went 4-1 with four pins. Overall, Warrior wrestlers went 43-27 at Lodi.
