2021 Spring Soccer - Rec & Travel Info

LEAGUE GUIDELINES:

Recreational Game Times: Saturday mornings, some potential mid-week games/scrimmages for the older divisions as the season progresses.

Practice: Weekday evenings....rec league practices will be on Tuesday and Thursdays.  I want to work on more of a clinic style vs team practice.  Players can attend both or either practice and will have a primary practice day based on coach availability.  We'll have a section of practice for team-based practice, but I want to focus on common skills and training across ALL teams in each level.

Location: All games and practices will be held at the Embreeville Complex on West Strasburg Road

Coaches: Volunteers (former WBYA players are encouraged to volunteer!)

Commissioner: Eric Eckenrode c/o [email protected]

KEY DATES for REC SOCCER:
Jan. 21 - Registration Opens
March 1 - Early Bird Registration Ends
March 15 -  REGISTRATION ENDS
March 10 - first games of season
No games Memorial Day weekend
May 1 - Picture Day
June 5 - last RECgames of season

PARTICIPATION DIVISIONS
Challenger (Special Needs) Soccer: for children with Special Needs so that all children can have the fun and experience the joy of playing soccer!  The Program Mission: to create and foster the physical and emotional growth and development of children with special needs through the sport of soccer and place the kids actively into the game to create meaningful and lasting experiences for all players.  The children will be grouped by ability and not age. Games or activities will be played on Saturdays for 1 hour. The program's primary emphasis is on creating a fun environment and learning experience for all participants. Players between the ages of 8-21 are welcome to join. For more info, contact [email protected]

U6 Campers:  For pre-K girls and boys typically 3 & 4 years old, focusing on fun and basic skills development. This 8-week (one night per week) program is perfect as a child's first experience with soccer. Registration Price: $50.00

SOCCER LEAGUE PLAY:  For players from pre-K thru high school.  While we have roughly based the divisions on USA Soccer guidelines, we have broken them out by grade level instead of birth year.  We feel this encourages camaraderie as the kids get to play with their classmates. However, if you feel your child is more advanced and wished to play up, or perhaps is newer to the game and wishes to play down as they grow with the sport, we will attempt to accommodate such requests (possible even within the season).Younger leagues focus on skills refinement and inclusive participation in lieu of a focus on winning only.  We will utilize multiple, group practices pre week instead of the single night/single team system we’ve used in the past.  Older leagues will add a competitive flair as well as increased game/scrimmage play. All league will be co-ed until we get critical mass to separate into boys/girls divisions, as follows:

U8 - PreK,1st grade - 4v4 on a 20x30 field with 4'x6' goals, no goalies

U10 - 2nd, 3rd grade - 7v7 on a 40x60 field with goalies in a 6.5'x18.5'goal

U12 - 4th, 5th grade - 9v9 on a 50x75 field with goalies in a 7'x21' goal

U14 - 6-8 grade - 11v11 on a FULL field with goalies in a 8'x24' goal

U18 - 9-12 grade - 11v11 on a FULL field with goalies in a 8'x24' goal

Based on registration numbers, 6th grades may be moved down to U12 and 7th/8th graders may be moved up with the high schoolers, or some approximate variation of groupings.  We may also have the U14 and/or U18s play on a smaller field (the 50x75 U12 field and goals) but with 8 players per side, which will allow us to field additional teams based on the smaller roster sizes.

BRANDYWINE UNITED TRAVEL PROGRAM
We will work in the Brandywine United SC travel team and WBYA rec league a bit better this year.  We will continue with the boys U14, U12 and U11 teams and look to add younger (maybe even older) teams AND DEFINITELY working to build a girls program (probably focusing on a U12 team of combined U11/U12 ladies).  Everything will be based on interest levels. All Travel players will be assigned to rec league teams and that has been included in the fees.  The extent to the level of participation is up to them, but we are encouraging the travel kids to be on and off field leaders for the Rec teams.

Travel practices will be on Wednesdays (and Saturday before the WBYA season starts).

Here's an outline of the season:
- Registration opens Jan. 21.
- Travel registration ends 2/15.
- 5 CLS games 4/10 thru 5/15
- Tournaments on 4/3 (returning teams) and 5/22
- League FeesTravel - $350 (includes the rec league early bird fees)

2021 Spring Soccer Update

As the snow melts, we can finally begin to look towards our Spring Soccer Season for WBYA and BUSC Travel Soccer.  As many people may not have been in the soccer mindset....

....we’ve extended early bird registration through the end of this week – Friday, March 5th. Scroll down to register.

REC SOCCER UPDATE

Registration ends on Monday, March 15th as we need to order uniforms and make teams.  Here are some details about the season:

  • Uniforms – Due to continued Covid concerns, we will be utilizing the same set-up as last year with each player receiving a shirt, socks, shorts and pinnie.  I know this isn’t a uniform, but it gives us the flexibility should a coach or large portion of a team contract Covid.  It also gives us the flexibility to swap players for competitive purposes.

  • Practice – Practices will be Tuesday and Thursday nights and will start the week after Easter (will Spring Break falling the week before Easter, it doesn’t give us the chance to start earlier)

  • Games – We will be Saturday mornings starting the week after Easter and run through the end of the DASD school year (first week of June)

TRAVEL SOCCER UPDATE

A little intro to travel soccer:

  • The travel soccer year typically runs from June to June (similar to the school year)

  • The age groups run on the calendar birth year (i.e, 2007 is U14, 2008 U13 and so on).

  • The Spring season runs April-May

  • Most clubs practice during the summer.  We will practice twice a week from just after July 4th thru August.

  • Fall is the primary season with a 7-9 game season from after Labor Day to mid-November.

Brandywine United Soccer Club (BUSC), will be participating in the Central League Soccer Spring season.  The plan is to have the same 3 teams as the Fall (boys U14, U12 & U11), but also expand to a girls team (most likely commingled u11/12).  We may look towards getting younger (U10) players or even older (U18) if there is enough interest.  Here are some details:

  • Spring Travel Season will cost $350 per player, this includes:

    • The WBYA rec league fee

    • A 5 games CLS Spring Season Games will be played on the following Sundays: April 11, 18, 25 and May 2, 9 and 16. (5 games over 6 dates) Rain dates: May 1, 8, 15 and 22. NOTE: This is a recent change from Saturdays as many clubs had concerns with field scheduling due to linger COVID restrictions

    • Two Tournaments

      • Nether United - one day tournament the Saturday of Easter weekend, 4/3.  Note: we may have to reconsidering depending on when we can get to the fields

      • Reading Rage - Sat/Sun the weekend before Memorial Day weekend (5/22-23)

  • Travel practice will be one night a week in the Spring/Fall on a night NOT to coincide with WBYA practices.  Preliminary thoughts are Travel practice on Wednesdays and all WBYA practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  • Practices were to begin mid February, but Mother Nature didn’t cooperate. The rains should wash away the snow, but we’ll probably need to wait for them to dry out a bit before beginning practices

  • Travel uniforms and gear are needed (about $72 for the home/away kit) and will be a separate, additional charge.

We need a little help on the coaching side as we expand.  I'd like two dedicated coaches for each Travel team.

MASK & COVID UPDATE

We follow the EPYSA (local soccer governing body) policies regarding soccer operations, which includes COVID restrictions.  For more information, please go to: https://www.epysa.org/covid-19-resources-/

The big issue is that the current State of PA regulations regarding masks is:

All coaches, spectators, referees, players should wear masks at all times.

  • The only time when players or referees do not have to wear a masks during participation is if they meet an exception in the Face Covering Order. Section 3 of the Order provides an exception that allows an individual to remove their mask if wearing a face covering would either cause a medical condition, or exacerbate an existing one, including respiratory issues that impede breathing, a mental health condition or a disability.

We will not be checking temperatures. As part of the Covid Waiver, families are responsible for self check before practices and games.

We hope these restrictions ease by the time the season starts and we can function as we did last Fall with masks NOT being required while engaged in active play.  If this policy, or more so non-rollback of the policy, effects your decision to participate in the Spring Season, WBYA will issue you a refund, less a $3 service charge.
