Game 1 Recap

First the grade for the Parents:  A+.  It was great seeing everyone out there last night, screaming support for their kids, helping out, and overall being super supportive.  It makes coaching the boys so much more fun.Now onto the boys:  your three coaches were pleased.  We knew at the beginning of the season we would have two kids that could pitch.  Our goal this year is to find the next crop of kids that can pitch.  But pitching and fielding is easy - hitting is the hard part and how you make the big bucks.  We need some work there but last night was like trial by fire:  with the exception of three of the older boys, none of these boys have ever faced live pitching from a person whose sole goal is to get them out.  Keep in mind, most kids were in coach pitch last year:  in that league every pitch is perfect and the pitcher wants you to hit it.  In this league, pitches are all over the place and the pitcher wants you to miss it.  While both teams had a lot of strikeouts last night, it was for the right reason - they were swinging at strikes, not balls that were hitting the backstop. The boys made two great plays defensively last night:  the hit to the outfield was a great hit that surprised everybody, but outfield to shortstop to catcher, and the kid was out at home by 30 feet!  Awesome.  The other great play was an assist by the left field fence.  I think Minton was out there earlier in the day cutting some links off the fence so balls would roll under them.  What would have been a home run turned into a harmless double.  As the coach of the Angels said, "That's the way the ball bounces sometimes."The boys did a lot of things right:  Every one of them was up there swinging.  For that we are proud of them.  We can fix swinging and missing.  We cannot fix an unwillingness or fear of swinging the bat and failing.  Hopefully you saw some methods to our madness.  Kids will continue to move around the field and just when they know what they are doing, we will move them somewhere else.  Remember, every team makes the playoffs.  Gameball:  Jackson Detty.  Mr. Clutch came up big as the RedSox were trailing 3-1 and his huge single drove in two runs that ended up being the game tying runs.Schedule to follow.  Enjoy your long weekend.
