Rush Men in US Open Cup First Round

The Rush Men have gained entry into the first round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the first time in club history. After a series of regional qualifying games, the tournament has alerted the club they will advance to the First Round matches scheduled for games beginning May 10th. The team is composed primarily of club Directors of Coaching, Rush Alumni and current Development Academy players. Coach Joe Webb has been making great strides in getting the Rush Men into more competitions and the advancement in the Open Cup is just another step to provide our top men's team with a great opportunity to compete. Coach Webb shares some of his thoughts on the Rush Men advancing in Open Cup:

What does it mean for Rush to have advanced to the First Round of the US Open Cup for the first time?

This is a very significant step for the club and something historical for the Rush that I'm super proud to be a part of as a coach but we also know as a team that we are capable of so much more and we had set our goals much higher than this to begin the year and so this is just a very big stepping stone for us.

Who will the team play in the first round?

We dont find out until April and it's kind of a grueling process

For the first round of the Cup, US Soccer will mix all the qualifying teams from the local amauter leagues into a bracket with the other amatuer teams that have qualifed through the PDL and NPSL. In past years the winner of the first round then move into a bracket with the professional teams from the USL being added and every round teams being added eventually working up to the addition of MLS teams in the 4th or 5th rounds.

How will participation in this event help Rush players/Coaches?

The US Open Cup is the oldest and most prestigious soccer tournament in this country and earning a berth into this competition has many benefits to the players and coaches. The National exposure a few games in the Open Cup can give to teams is extremely important especially at the amateur levels and the opportunity to play against some of the top teams in the country and show where you stand with such a prestigious Cup at stake is priceless. For many of the coaches and players on this team, they will never again get the opportunity to participate in an event as big as the US Open Cup again so it can be a once in a lifetime learning experience for most.

What is your favorite Rush Core Value?

I always dislike this question because I think they are all so important but I think it's a tie between Tenacity and Passion and maybe because they both work in so well together. The passion is what drives our players to play this game they love and the tenacity to overcome everything that stands in our way, is what makes our players great. On the field I believe these two core values are what make Rush Soccer players special and why they achieve so much.
